Ahhh the smoky eye.
Perhaps there is no longer running eye makeup trend than the smoky eye, which is in no danger of going out of style.
The key here is to blend well. Also, make sure to keep all other makeup light or you risk looking like a clown.

You don't want the rest of your makeup to compete with your eyes.
Step 1: Holding the skin of your upper lid taut, apply eyeliner from the inside corner of the eye outward. Draw strokes into the lash line. The middle of the line should be a bit thicker than the edges.

Step 2: Use a cotton swap (or your finger, if you're lazy like me) to "smudge" the liner.
Step 3: Dab an eyeshadow brush into a deep-hued eyeshadow and apply over the eyeliner to set the line. (Blow on the brush first to remove any excess shadow). Layering liner with a shadow is the secret to a perfect smoky eye.
Step 4: Blend shadow well, then follow with eyeshadow. According to the March 2006 issue of InStyle Magazine, with a smoky eye, "color should diffuse from rich and dark near the lashes to almost sheer as it extends to the crease."

The smoldering, smoky eye is the new thing when it comes to sexy, noticeable eye makeup that gets attention without going overboard. While the look may seem intimidating at first, anybody can capture the classic smoky eye in a few simple steps.
Preparing the Eyelid
Preparing the Eyelid
The application of a good smoky eye is like an art, and every artistic endeavor begins with a good foundation. Your eyelid must be prepared for the application of makeup to ensure that the look is as long-lasting as it is beautiful. It doesn't take anything special to prepare the eyelid. Apply your basic foundation lightly over the eyelid and brow bone and underneath your eye. Powder-based foundations work best for this.
Applying the Liner
With a dark black or brown eye pencil, line the inside rim of both the top and bottom eyelid. For a more dramatic effect, use liquid eyeliner but be careful to get a thin, straight line. Chunky eyeliner has no place in the smoky eye look.

Applying the Shadow
To apply the shadow, use a small shadow brush or a cotton swab. If you used liner pencil, use your applicator to blur the edges of the eyeliner so that it will blend easily into the smoky shadow. Apply the darkest shadow to the part of your lid that is directly above the eyeliner line, and smudge them together.
Next, apply your lighter colored shadow around the entire eye. Fill in the rest of the eyelid with this lighter colored shadow, and apply a small amount underneath the eye as well. The key to a good smoky eye is softening and blending, so you don't look like you have a black eye.
Add the Finishing Touches
Mascara is the perfect finishing touch to the smoky eye. Use a brownish black or black colored plumping or lengthening mascara for the best results. Then, go back and make sure that everything is blended smoothly. Voila! You have the perfect smoky eye.
